Broad and Powerful EPR Law Passes in California
With Oregon and Maine leading the way, and recently Colorado, California has stepped up big in its passing of an EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) law that will have profound effects not only on its own state’s producers of plastic products through a required transformation to reusable, recyclable, and/or compostable content (in some instances in only two years), but also to many others. These large factories don’t just produce for California alone, so the surplus that is exported will also contain planet-positive solutions. With firm restrictions on single-use plastics and the requirement that plastic makers take financial responsibility for the state’s recycling program, the effects of this new law will be transformative. Companies that use plastic products in their supply chain, such as food producers, are scrambling to find forward-compliant solutions that will satisfy the new law and make for a leg-up in how their brand(s) are perceived.
